Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui Bagua Crystals and Missing Areas

I am placing my nine feng shui bagua natural crystals around my space, and I noticed that, just like in our last home, my Relationship area is outside of my house in the yard. I’m not sure how that keeps happening... see my diagram below. The dashed lines are the outline of my house I traced from a blueprint I had. What do you suggest I do for that area? Do I put the crystal in my yard? Anything special I should do to this space?

Mary K., Dana Point, CA

Hi Mary

Thank you for listening to the podcast, sending in this question, and for purchasing the 9 Feng Shui Bagua Natural Crystals!

First off, good job on laying the bagua. It is definitely interesting that this is the second home that you noticed the Relationship area is missing from your floor plan. Sometimes we are attracted to spaces for a reason. It’s like how we live with habitual patterns. However there’s some intelligence in this, as you may up with spaces that may exacerbate or point out areas in your life that need attention or improvement. Are there any relationships that need some energy or consideration? That can be your primary relationship, business relationships, relationship with your mother or your maternal side or just relationships in general.

You also had a good instinct about completing the bagua by placing something in the yard where the missing bagua area is. That is something we often do as feng shui consultants. The crystal is a great way to do that. You can bury it at the top corner to energetically complete the bagua and “take back” the missing area. You can also do this with a light post, a tree or other ritual feng shui object. Just whatever you do, use the intention that you will be energetically filling in the missing Relationship gua.

One final note, the 9 Feng Shui Bagua Natural Crystals are a wonderful, simple way to activate each area; however, a more advanced technique would be to only use the crystals in the three areas that need the most attention. Since Relationships is missing from the house bagua, the corresponding crystal is one of the three that you can always have in place. Then consider for yourself or your family what other two areas need the most energy. This is something you can revisit every 90 days, or as needed. The reasons are: first, in feng shui, it’s not about fixing everything, especially if there are places that don’t need fixing. And when all nine areas are improved, it’s too perfect, and things then start to fall apart. Second, it’s beneficial to work on only the areas that need addressing. When you focus your energy on those three areas, more change can happen than when you try to fix everything at once.

Hopefully this helps clear things up around the bagua and your new space! Check out our podcast series on what each gua represents, and let us know what areas you end up working with! :)

Q&A Sunday: Making Space for Music and Love

I'm about to start a new job, change states, and move into a townhouse where the master bedroom is a huge room and has high ceilings with an attached sitting area to the side of the bedroom. I was wondering - can I use this sitting area as a music practice space? My instrument is large and made primarily of beautiful rosewood with a little bit of metal (I play the marimba).

There is a spare bedroom, but it was smaller than expected. I had originally planned to use that as an office plus music space but after visiting the unit I realize it would be tight to put the instrument there as well as a desk (if the desk is to be in the command position), and I know I shouldn't put the office in the master bedroom. I'm not sure if having an instrument in the bedroom would disturb the peace or increase harmony. I'm hoping to start playing more as I stopped because of other life commitments. I also am single and want to be open to finding new romantic love

Thank you!

Lin O., Los Angeles, CA

Hi Lin,

Thank you so much for your email! My husband is a musician; he plays clarinet! I asked him for his two cents on this too! First, congrats on the new job, the new move… the new home! All exciting stuff!

My intuition says that the instrument would be better for you in the living room, or in a spare bedroom. The instrument is large and is part of your work. It holds a big place in your life, and you want to create space for a partner. It’s better to keep both the office and the instrument out of the bedroom in your case. Is there room in the living room? I think it would be ideal there because you’d see it more often, and hopefully be inspired to play it. The living room represents the more outward social aspect of your home. I think it would be great to play music with friends or in your social space.

My husband also agrees, good to keep the musical instrument separate. He says music is social, so it’s great in the living room. Or dedicate a bedroom and just get a smaller desk and laptop.

If really the only space you have is in the master, perhaps you can separate it out with a partition, curtain or bookshelf. But I really love the idea of having a spacious and open master bedroom to help to invite a partner into your space and life. When your spaces are all filled up, the universe sees that you don’t have room for anything new. However you want to find a new romantic love! So give the universe the signal - loud and clear - with an open welcoming bedroom.

Be sure to also read the other posts on using feng shui for love, peach blossom luck and setting up a new home. These may all prove very helpful in getting comfortable in your new space! I look forward to hearing how you choose to design your holistic space, so please send photos once you're settled in!

Feng Shui Tips for a Good House Floor Plan

featured on The Spruce

If you’re looking for a new home, renting or buying, apartment or house, or even for your existing home, here are some feng shui tips for a good house floor plan.

The Entry

The entry is your face to the world in feng shui philosophy. Unless you’re looking for a hideaway as a retiree, you want to find a home that has a clear easy-to-find entry. Just think about the first time you approached your home. Was it easy to find the front door? Does the doorbell work? It is clean and well lit? These are key factors to the feng shui of your home.

It’s best if there’s an easy-to-follow path from the street to the front door. That the front door and entry foyer is open and spacious. This way you can attract the best opportunities and they have a place to gather and collect.

Here are some guidelines for the entry foyer. Avoid having a wall or stairs less than six feet away from the entry door. There should be enough light in this space (so even a change to a brighter bulb can help). Also, avoid homes with another door or a large window directly across from the front door. The qi (life force energy) just goes straight out of the house with this sort of configuration.
