Feng Shui & Color: Green and Blue

Color is a simple and powerful way to shift the energy of a space. Just think about how you feel walking into a bedroom that’s painted bright pink versus a similar room painted in deep charcoal gray. Also, there are so many possibilities when it comes to introducing color into your home, so it can be a fun way to get creative with your space!

Today, I want to talk about green and blue. Greens, blues, and teals are associated with hope, new beginnings, and growth. They’re tied to the wood element in feng shui, which represents vitality and healing.

Green and blue are also calming and relaxing. They can be tranquil, healthy, and restorative, and soothing for the eyes. They’re balancing colors that are often found in nature, in trees, plants, and the sky. There have even been scientific studies where people have healed much more quickly when they have views of nature.

In feng shui, wood element colors like green and blue represent life energy and are connected to the Zhen or new beginnings area of the bagua. Green is also related to the heart chakra, and blue to the throat chakra.

Greens and blues are great colors to choose for wall paint. They work well in most rooms, and the softer versions of these hues are especially good for bedrooms and other areas where you want to rest. In more public rooms like your living room, you can use stronger tones, like vibrant teals, to invigorate, refresh, and promote conversation.

Another way to introduce green and blue is through crystals in these colors, like turquoise, aquamarine, and malachite. You can also add green in the form of plants, which promote growth and healing.

As you’re thinking about how you want to use colors in your home, make sure to follow your own preferences and intuition. We all have different associations with particular colors, and the most important thing to remember is that the colors in your home should feel good to you.

Q&A Sunday: The Best Feng Shui Bed Position

What is the best way to position a bed in feng shui?

This is a great question, because your bedroom is an especially important area of your home in feng shui. Your bedroom represents you, and changes you make to this part of your home can be really effective. Your bed in particular is even more closely connected to you, and since you spend so many passive hours there sleeping, your bed really has an impact on your energy.

When it comes to the position of your bed, you first want to make sure your bed is in the commanding position. This means that you can see the door while lying in bed, without being directly in line with the door. This allows you to feel safer and less stressed, because you can see anyone or anything that might come in through the door. The commanding position is especially important for your bed, because feeling safe and at ease here will allow you to rest and sleep more deeply. If it’s not possible to set up your bed so that you can see the door, place a mirror so that you can see a reflection of the door instead.

You also want to avoid being in the coffin position. This is when you’re lying in bed and your feet are pointing out the door. The coffin position is energetically draining and makes you more vulnerable. You’re also not in command. Ideally, don’t set up your bed in this way, but if you can’t avoid it, don’t panic! You can adjust this placement by hanging a feng shui crystal ball halfway between the bed and the door.

Lastly, make sure you’re supported by a solid wall. You want to have a stable wall right behind you and a stable headboard, such as this one, that is fastened to your bed frame. This will provide support for you while you’re laying in bed. Ideally, you don’t want your bed to be up against a window, especially if you tend to have low energy, if you feel fearful or unsafe, or if you’re on the ground floor. If you have no choice and you have to put your bed against the window, that’s ok. You have to work with what you have. In this case, make sure you have a solid headboard supporting you.

I hope that helps!

Q&A Sunday: Is Purple a Good Feng Shui Color?

Is purple a good color in feng shui?

First, I encourage you to read more about my philosophy on color. It’s more complex than certain colors being “good” or “bad.” It’s important to think about which colors support your intention, as well as how different colors make you feel.

That said, purple is an auspicious color in feng shui, and can be helpful in many situations. It’s connected to wealth and abundance, as well as elegance and royalty. Purple is the combination of active red (fire element) and relaxing blue (wood element). This means that purple can harmonize and create inner balance and peace. Purple is also the color of the crown chakra, related to enlightenment and wisdom.

Purple is connected to the abundance area of the bagua map, called Xun in Chinese. You can place purple in this area to activate and welcome abundance, as well as self worth. To invite prosperity in your career or business, activate the abundance area or your desk. For overall prosperity, activate the abundance area of your home. You can also work with the abundance area of your bedroom, which can support you as an individual, or you and your partner.

A vase of fresh purple flowers is a great activation for the abundance area. Make sure to take care of your flowers by changing the water often, and cutting the stems regularly to allow them to drink more water. You can also place a purple amethyst crystal in this area, or another purple accent that speaks to you.

Keep in mind that what I offer on my blog is the entry level version of feng shui, and if you really want to work with it, it’s best to work with an expert. This is true for a lot of disciplines. For example, you wouldn’t just poke yourself with needles if you wanted to experience the benefits of acupuncture - you would go to a trained practitioner.

This applies to feng shui as well. I try to keep it as simple as possible on my blog and podcast so you can apply it to your own life. But if you’re really curious, I encourage you to understand that it’s a really deep wisdom, and work with a consultant or study more deeply
