Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui Bagua Crystals and Missing Areas

I am placing my nine feng shui bagua natural crystals around my space, and I noticed that, just like in our last home, my Relationship area is outside of my house in the yard. I’m not sure how that keeps happening... see my diagram below. The dashed lines are the outline of my house I traced from a blueprint I had. What do you suggest I do for that area? Do I put the crystal in my yard? Anything special I should do to this space?

Mary K., Dana Point, CA

Hi Mary

Thank you for listening to the podcast, sending in this question, and for purchasing the 9 Feng Shui Bagua Natural Crystals!

First off, good job on laying the bagua. It is definitely interesting that this is the second home that you noticed the Relationship area is missing from your floor plan. Sometimes we are attracted to spaces for a reason. It’s like how we live with habitual patterns. However there’s some intelligence in this, as you may up with spaces that may exacerbate or point out areas in your life that need attention or improvement. Are there any relationships that need some energy or consideration? That can be your primary relationship, business relationships, relationship with your mother or your maternal side or just relationships in general.

You also had a good instinct about completing the bagua by placing something in the yard where the missing bagua area is. That is something we often do as feng shui consultants. The crystal is a great way to do that. You can bury it at the top corner to energetically complete the bagua and “take back” the missing area. You can also do this with a light post, a tree or other ritual feng shui object. Just whatever you do, use the intention that you will be energetically filling in the missing Relationship gua.

One final note, the 9 Feng Shui Bagua Natural Crystals are a wonderful, simple way to activate each area; however, a more advanced technique would be to only use the crystals in the three areas that need the most attention. Since Relationships is missing from the house bagua, the corresponding crystal is one of the three that you can always have in place. Then consider for yourself or your family what other two areas need the most energy. This is something you can revisit every 90 days, or as needed. The reasons are: first, in feng shui, it’s not about fixing everything, especially if there are places that don’t need fixing. And when all nine areas are improved, it’s too perfect, and things then start to fall apart. Second, it’s beneficial to work on only the areas that need addressing. When you focus your energy on those three areas, more change can happen than when you try to fix everything at once.

Hopefully this helps clear things up around the bagua and your new space! Check out our podcast series on what each gua represents, and let us know what areas you end up working with! :)

Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui for a Quiet Lifestyle

andraz-lazic-64sgR8HV_68-unsplash.jpg

I'm moving unexpectedly due to a poor experience in my previous apartment. The manager feels it would be a better fit for my quiet lifestyle. Question: I desire peace, tranquility and an ambiance of water. I love citrus smells too. What feng shui suggestions do you have for a small apartment, family of 4 (3 kids & myself)?

Trina S., Las Vegas, NV

Hi Trina,

Thanks so much for your question. I’m so sorry that you had such a poor experience in your home that you need to move. I hope your new place does fit your quiet lifestyle better.

I find that so many of us seek peace and tranquility. I can’t tell you how many clients come to me, and they just want a relaxing home. You’ve also indicated you are attracted to water, which is related to dark colors (think black and very dark blue) as well as the Path in Life area on the feng shui bagua. It's also associated with fluidity, wisdom and intelligence. It's good news that you love citrus smells! In feng shui philosophy, oranges can welcome positive, life-affirming energy. Physiologically, oranges also help relieve depression and improve mood. Check out our orange peel ritual for space clearing that's perfect for the new lunar year!

I don’t have your floor plan, but you wrote that you’re searching for quiet. I can offer some general tips based on my intuition and what you have shared. If you love the ambiance of water, perhaps include a water element in your living room. The sound is soothing and brings water energy. Water elements, like fountains, can welcome wealth if you direct the water current towards inside or the center of your home (rather than out the door). As mentioned above, oranges are also are a great way to bring in life energy. We have some space clearing techniques on the blog or our orange Happy spray that is especially good for new homes. It’s also good to periodically clear the space no matter how long you’ve lived in your home.

Most importantly, because you have three kids, please review the commanding position and bed locations. If possible, try to locate each child's bed in the commanding position. This position is diagonal, or kitty corner, from the door with a clear view of what is entering. The commanding position is especially important for children. If you have bunk beds for the kids, and this is all you have space for, be sure to stay tuned for a future post. We'll talk more about that. But they're not ideal for kid's feng shui. You can read more about designing a kids' room with feng shui here

I hope these help! Send us your floor plan sometime, and we may be able to offer some more specific tips.

Q&A Sunday: Improving a Bedroom

Is it ok to place the bed where the headboard is on the same side of bedroom door? Opposite the door is a 2-door built-in closet, and the window is in the corner on the on the same side of the closet. Also, the centralized air conditioning outlet is on the same side as the entrance, and the air is blowing right on our heads when we sleep. I'd like to do a complete make over of the room to create more space and am thinking of getting rid of our TV stand with cupboards and our dresser. What is the best color for a bedroom? Is pink relaxing? I am a widow, so only my daughter and I are sleeping in the room.

Carina T., Salmiya, Kuwait

Hi Carina

Hello to Kuwait! Thank you for your email, floor plan and questions.

First question: Headboard on same side of bedroom door

According to the basic feng shui principle of the commanding position, you do not want locate your headboard on the same wall as your bedroom door. In your floor plan it looks like your headboard is not on the same wall. So that would be good, and you would be in command.

When you arrange your bed so that you cannot see the door from your sleeping position, you are unable to see what is coming at you, both physically and metaphorically. In feng shui philosophy, it's best to be able to see what may be approaching you so that you can seize opportunities and prepare for other circumstances. Physiologically, having your back to the door produces a stress response, and even though you may not feel it directly, it wears down over time and can create health issues.

However your bed is right next to the wall. It would be better if you could have some space between the bed and the wall. Perhaps because you are a widow, you need that extra support on the side wall. But overall it’s better to move that bed away from the wall if you can. Ideally 18”, but as much as you can.

Second question: Air conditioning blowing on your heads

This is not very comfortable to have the air conditioning blowing on your head, however I don’t think you have enough room to place the bed in any other location. Is there a way to change the direction of the air so it’s more comfortable? This is more of a mundane issue, as the bed location is more important.

Third question: Making more space, removing TV stand and dresser

It would be great if you could eliminate the TV in the bedroom, as it creates a more peaceful and EMF-free environment. This is especially important if you have sleeping problems. The dresser can go, if it’s not necessary. Then that gives you some space to move your bed over more into command and off the wall.

Final question: Color for room

In general, I always ask what color YOU like. But as a guideline, blues and greens, as well as earth tones can be healing, relaxing and supportive. Pink is not necessarily relaxing… but if it’s a color you like, listen to your intuition. Pink relates to relationships and the mother in feng shui philosophy. It’s also feminine and yin. So maybe you’re drawn to pink because you need some support!
