is there a most auspicious time of day on Chinese New Year to open windows/doors for nine minutes? Or does time of day matter?

N L D., Lindale, TX

Hi! Thanks for your question!

Yes, there are more auspicious hours to perform feng shui adjustments. I think most of you are familiar with the Taoist concept of yin and yang, which is a philosophy that describes everything as a dance between two opposites. Some examples of yin and yang (in that order) are: dark and light, moon and sun, cold and hot, feminine and masculine, internal and external, passive and active and so on. Everything in our universe has both yin and yang; that’s why I say it’s a dance. The yin yang symbol represents this constantly moving relationship between the two opposites. Then the little dot of white in the black, and the little dot of black in the white…this means that with yin there is yang, and within yang there is yin. The darkness only exists in relationship to the light.

When we look at how a day progresses in time, there are hours that are more yin and hours that are more yang. 11am to 1pm are the most yang hours of the day and beneficial to activate and start new endeavors with a big push of energy. Similarly, the hours of 11pm to 1am are the most yin hours of the day and may be a more ideal time to unravel and/or clarify internal workings of the mind, or have a more subtle push forward (like a "slow and steady wins the race" type of attitude).

As you see, feng shui philosophy is layered and is interdependent on many Asian philosophies, which really makes it so rich and powerful. I hope this information helps you to apply some changes in your life in a more powerful way! Let us know if you made feng shui adjustments for the Chinese New Year and how they made you feel!

Q&A Sunday: The Best Feng Shui Bed Position

What is the best way to position a bed in feng shui?

This is a great question, because your bedroom is an especially important area of your home in feng shui. Your bedroom represents you, and changes you make to this part of your home can be really effective. Your bed in particular is even more closely connected to you, and since you spend so many passive hours there sleeping, your bed really has an impact on your energy.

When it comes to the position of your bed, you first want to make sure your bed is in the commanding position. This means that you can see the door while lying in bed, without being directly in line with the door. This allows you to feel safer and less stressed, because you can see anyone or anything that might come in through the door. The commanding position is especially important for your bed, because feeling safe and at ease here will allow you to rest and sleep more deeply. If it’s not possible to set up your bed so that you can see the door, place a mirror so that you can see a reflection of the door instead.

You also want to avoid being in the coffin position. This is when you’re lying in bed and your feet are pointing out the door. The coffin position is energetically draining and makes you more vulnerable. You’re also not in command. Ideally, don’t set up your bed in this way, but if you can’t avoid it, don’t panic! You can adjust this placement by hanging a feng shui crystal ball halfway between the bed and the door.

Lastly, make sure you’re supported by a solid wall. You want to have a stable wall right behind you and a stable headboard, such as this one, that is fastened to your bed frame. This will provide support for you while you’re laying in bed. Ideally, you don’t want your bed to be up against a window, especially if you tend to have low energy, if you feel fearful or unsafe, or if you’re on the ground floor. If you have no choice and you have to put your bed against the window, that’s ok. You have to work with what you have. In this case, make sure you have a solid headboard supporting you.

I hope that helps!

Q&A Sunday: Is Purple a Good Feng Shui Color?

Is purple a good color in feng shui?

First, I encourage you to read more about my philosophy on color. It’s more complex than certain colors being “good” or “bad.” It’s important to think about which colors support your intention, as well as how different colors make you feel.

That said, purple is an auspicious color in feng shui, and can be helpful in many situations. It’s connected to wealth and abundance, as well as elegance and royalty. Purple is the combination of active red (fire element) and relaxing blue (wood element). This means that purple can harmonize and create inner balance and peace. Purple is also the color of the crown chakra, related to enlightenment and wisdom.

Purple is connected to the abundance area of the bagua map, called Xun in Chinese. You can place purple in this area to activate and welcome abundance, as well as self worth. To invite prosperity in your career or business, activate the abundance area or your desk. For overall prosperity, activate the abundance area of your home. You can also work with the abundance area of your bedroom, which can support you as an individual, or you and your partner.

A vase of fresh purple flowers is a great activation for the abundance area. Make sure to take care of your flowers by changing the water often, and cutting the stems regularly to allow them to drink more water. You can also place a purple amethyst crystal in this area, or another purple accent that speaks to you.

Keep in mind that what I offer on my blog is the entry level version of feng shui, and if you really want to work with it, it’s best to work with an expert. This is true for a lot of disciplines. For example, you wouldn’t just poke yourself with needles if you wanted to experience the benefits of acupuncture - you would go to a trained practitioner.

This applies to feng shui as well. I try to keep it as simple as possible on my blog and podcast so you can apply it to your own life. But if you’re really curious, I encourage you to understand that it’s a really deep wisdom, and work with a consultant or study more deeply
