Happy Lunar New Year! We are about to welcome the Year of the Tiger. I have a lot of exciting events coming up as we approach this transition, and I hope you’ll join me to celebrate

A new lunar new year also means new Nine Star Ki forecasts! Nine Star Ki is a form of numerology that is connected to the feng shui bagua, the elements, and the I Ching, and it’s one of the foundational tools that I teach my feng shui students. Understanding your Nine Star Ki can help you get a sense of what kind of energy is coming your way, so you can set yourself up to stay balanced and supported in a new year.

How to Calculate Your Own Nine Star Number

To calculate your principal number, you’ll want to add up the digits of your birth year until you reach a single digit number, and then subtract that from 11. If you were born between January 1 and February 4, you will subtract that number from 12 instead. Here are a couple of examples:

If you were born in 1986:

Add: 1+9+8+6 = 24

Reduce to a single digit: 2+4 = 6

Subtract from 11: 11-6 = 5

*if you were born between January 1 and February 4, subtract from 12: 12-6 = 6

If you were born in 1940:

Add: 1+9+4+0 = 14

Reduce to a single digit: 1+4 = 5

Subtract from 11: 11-5 = 6

*if you were born between January 1 and February 4, subtract from 12: 12-5 = 7

Your Energy Forecast for 2022

Your principal number that you calculated above will help give you an idea of what kind of energy you can expect in the Year of the Tiger:

If your principal number is 1, in 2022 you will be in the year of Planning. This is a quieter year. It might not look like much is happening on the surface, but it’s actually a very important year in terms of reflecting, planning, and getting things in order for the future. The work you do now will benefit you in future years that are more active. As a 1 Water person, you’ll feel pretty comfortable in this energy. You’re a pretty intuitive person, and this could be a good time to tap into the more intuitive side of yourself.

If your principal number is 2, in 2022 you will be in the year of Germination. What seeds do you want to plant in your life this year? If you think about planting actual seeds in a garden, you always want to plant more than you’ll need, because you won’t know until later which ones will flourish. Don’t be afraid to put a few ideas out into the world this year. Over the next few years, you’ll be able to see which ones thrived. This is also a quieter time, which will feel comfortable to you as a 2 Earth person.

If your principal number is 3, in 2022 you will be in the year of Sprouting. This is an energetic year when you’ll start to see growth from the seeds that you’ve planted. This is a great year for starting or launching new projects. As a 3 Wood, you are already a very energetic person, so enjoy this growth and remember to check in with your plan so you don’t get over excited about starting new things.

If your principal number is 4, in 2022 you will be in the year of Rapid Growth. The things you’ve been working on over the past few years will really start to move and grow this year. Like a big redwood tree, you have the potential to be both grounded and connected to your higher self. As a 4 Wood person, you are probably used to having a lot of different things going on in your life. There may be a lot of movement and activity this year, so remember to take care of yourself so you don’t get burnt out.

If your principal number is 5, in 2022 you will be in the year of Fluctuation. This year might feel a little chaotic, but from that chaos will come growth. You’ll have the opportunity to reinvent yourself this year as you go through big changes. As a 5 Earth person, you are good at problem-solving and troubleshooting. This is a good time to reevaluate things and see if there is anything that isn’t working that you need to let go.

If your principal number is 6, in 2022 you will be in the year of Prosperity. You’ll be recognized for your skills and knowledge this year, and you’ll begin to collect the fruits of your labor. Harvesting is still hard work, but it’s also very rewarding, so enjoy the confidence and rewards from what you’ve put out into the world. As a 6 Metal, you are a fast, efficient personality, and you’re in a fast-paced year, so be sure to take care of yourself. Take breaks, make time for self-care practices, and remember to nourish yourself.

If your principal number is 7, in 2022 you will be in the year of Celebration. Now that you’ve put in the work of cultivating and harvesting, it’s time to enjoy yourself! This is a good year to sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty around you. As a 7 Metal person, you’re naturally good at appreciating beauty and the finer things in life, so it will feel good to embrace this year’s energy - just be mindful of overindulgence or overspending.

If your principal number is 8, in 2022 you will be in the year of Stillness. This is a quiet year that encourages you to look within and focus on self-cultivation. As an 8 Earth person, this is a comfortable year for you, since you naturally like being on your own. It’s also possible to become too isolated and lose sight of what’s happening around you, so make sure you also consider your connection to the world.

If your principal number is 9, in 2022 you will be in the year of Recognition. Things will be brought to light, and you’ll be able to see and be seen more clearly. You might experience promotions or recognition for things you’ve been working on for a long time, and you might feel less afraid of being seen and more open to getting out and socializing. It’s also possible that things you haven’t yet been willing to look at will be revealed. As a 9 Fire person, you will naturally feel pretty comfortable in this energy. Try not to go overboard, and remain humble as you receive recognition for your efforts.

Keep in mind that these numbers move in a cycle, so whatever energy you experience this year won’t be forever. Also, remember that every year holds a lot of promise for all of us, and great learning and growth can come from challenges.

Feng Shui for Luck and Protection in the Year of the Tiger

Silver pig keychain charm on red cord

It’s been so nice to hear from many of you as you’re switching out your 2021 charms for your new 2022 charms! If you don’t know what I’m referring to, there is a Chinese zodiac animal associated with each year. This past year has been the Year of the Ox, and we will soon be welcoming the Year of the Tiger. In BTB feng shui, one of the adjustments or cures is to carry with you the year animal’s best friend as an amulet or protective charm.

The Tiger’s best friend is the Pig, so it is auspicious to carry a realistic three-dimensional representation of a Pig with you during 2022, the Year of the Tiger. The Pig charms that I sell in the Holistic Spaces shop are ones that I personally make by hand and bless. I enjoy making these charms every year, and I chose to put them on a keychain because it’s a practical way to keep the animal close to you.

I get a lot of questions about these charms, and especially about what to do if they break. If your charm breaks, it’s actually a good thing. The purpose of a protective amulet is to protect you, and if it breaks that means that it’s doing its job. The charm has absorbed or deflected some negative qi. It is a good idea to replace the charm if it breaks, but it isn’t something to be worried about.

Another question I get is about what to do with the old charm after you’ve purchased a new one for the current year. I recommend that you take the old charm off your key ring, and really humbly thank the charm for protecting you and offering you support. Then, you can take the cord off of the charm and burn it. Offer it to the fire, and then be thankful to let go of anything that may have been holding you back, or anything from 2021 that you don’t want to carry with you.

Then, if you’d like to recycle the metal parts, you may do that. You can also keep the animal and place it on your altar or in a safe place. You might want to keep each animal and collect them until you have all twelve animals. There’s a powerful feng shui adjustment where you have one of each of the zodiac animals together, which represents harmony amongst all the different archetypes of every person in the world. You will have gotten to know each of the twelve animal archetypes during the time you carried them with you. As you keep each animal close to you for a year, you start to understand each one.

After you’ve thanked your 2021 charm, and recycled it or put it in a safe place, you can put the new charm on your keychain. With humble thoughtfulness, curiosity, and openness, invite your new Pig charm to offer you good luck, support, and companionship in the Year of the Water Tiger

Lastly, I want to thank everyone who has purchased a charm from me this year and in previous years. I appreciate you supporting me as a small business, and I hope you have a wonderful 2022!
