Hello, I'm Anjie Cho, and today I will share with you some tips to separate an area in a studio apartment by using a curtain.

The most challenging aspect of living in a studio apartment is separating your public active space such as your living, dining, kitchen and work areas from your private passive sleeping area. It's very important to visually and physically separate your sleep and public areas when designing the layout of your studio apartment.

One way you can achieve this is with curtains. In this example I've used a ceiling mounted curtain track. There are also curtain wires that will work but in my experience, depending on how long the span is, the wire will begin to droop with the weight of the curtain and this doesn't look good. The ceiling mounted curtain tracks and rails are rigid and end up looking the cleanest. Regular curtain rods will also work well if you can mount the supports on the ceiling.

Make sure you get the correct types of screws and anchors for the ceiling you have. I have concrete slab ceilings here, so I used a hammering drill and concrete anchors. Be sure to measure out the space you have so the holes are located correctly.

In this application I used a semi opaque fabric so there is visual for that privacy but you still see some light pass through. If sound is an issue, it might be better to use a heavier fabric.

The other advantage of drapes is flexibility. When you need more space you can open it up like this because after all a studio is a small living space.

De-Stress Your Bedroom: Feng Shui Style

featured this week in Savor Magazine

Did you know your bedroom environment greatly influences your stress levels and ability to truly rest and regenerate? We spend many passive “yin” hours sleeping in this room. It’s no surprise that in Feng Shui philosophy, your bedroom represents you. Here are some tips to create a harmonious space of relaxation and repose.

Location, Location, Location

Location absolutely matters! Specifically, I’m referring to the location of your bed in relation to the bedroom door. The best location for the bed is the farthest position from the door, while not in line with or behind the swing of it.

When you are lying in bed, you want to be able to easily see the door. You feel safe when you can see your bedroom door; therefore, your mind and body relax because you are in control of your environment. If this arrangement is not possible, set up a mirror such that while you are lying in bed, you can clearly see out the door.

What’s Underneath?

What is underneath your bed influences your sleep and well-being. It is recommended that you keep nothing under your bed, so the energy and “chi” can flow easily around you while you are sleeping. We spend many idle hours asleep, so you are easily susceptible to the energies of the objects below your bed.

If you must store things here, stick with soft bed-related items such as linens, blankets and pillows. Be sure to stay away from sharp objects and specifically anything negatively nostalgic like photos of ex-partners.

I'm Anjie Cho, and this is how to use clocks with Feng Shui.

An analog clock, like this one, symbolizes time and the passing of time. The message is that life is a cycle and there will be another midnight, another tomorrow, another chance to start again. In feng shui there are a few things to consider when locating clocks in your home.

First, what kind of clock. I mentioned before that an analog clock symbolizes cycles and offers more comfort. A digital clock like this one gives a feeling of time ticking away and disappearing. Therefore, for feng shui uses, stick to an analog clock. The digital clock may add more stress to your life.

Second, is the clock plugged in or is it battery operated? It's preferable to have a battery-operated clock because of EMFs. EMF stands for electro-magnetic forces, and these energetically deplete your environment causing headaches and other health issues. A clock that's plugged in will emit EMFs, whereas the batter-operated one will not.

Lastly, where to locate your analog, battery-operated clock. This sort of clock could be comforting in a child's room where they can get a sense of the stability in the cycles of life. It could be a great above their desk. Another location could be in the hallway of the home or living room, again reminding the inhabitants of the passage of time. Rooms to avoid would be the dining room where you may feel rushed to eat, or the bedroom where you should be focusing on rest.

Clocks can be placed thoughtfully in your home using feng shui principles to support and nourish your life.
